Tamper Resistant Receptacles

Tamper Resistant Receptacles

Every year, approximately 2400 kids hurt themselves with unsafe receptacles, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is also estimated that 6-12 child fatalities occur a year in incidents like these.

It’s impossible to monitor kids 24 hours a day, seven days a week - all it takes is a second to be electrocuted. But, can greatly reduce the chance of harm or injury.

Tamper resistant receptacles help prevent shocks and burns by closing off the contact openings. That is, spring-loaded shutters close off the slots where plugs are inserted. Both a plug’s metal prongs must be inserted to make contact, which creates an electrical current. Because both springs must be compressed at the same time, this prevents the shutters from opening when a child attempts to insert an object into the slot.

Tamper resistant receptacles are not only safe but affordable. The usual cost difference is $0.75 between traditional receptacles and tamper resistant ones. They are also available in a wide variety of colors and styles, to easily match household decor.

Tamper resistant receptacles have an advantage over caps or receptacles with a sliding cover. Caps can be lost or become a choking hazard for young children. Sliding covers are also susceptible. Children may learn to remove them by watching adults, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
